SUVA (Xinhua) – The Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) countries opened a two-day ministerial meeting on environment and climate change in Fiji’s western tourist city of Nadi on Thursday.
It is the first ever MSG Environment and Climate Change Ministers Meeting which was attended by the Pacific island countries’ environment and foreign affairs ministers.
In his opening speech, Fiji’s Minister for Local
Government and Environment Samuela Saumatua said common interest binds Pacific nations to better adapt and
mitigate climate change.
Saumatua reminded the participants of the imminent threat of climate change if there was inaction, saying “today will define the quality of
life of our people in future” and “the long-term sustainability of our natural resources is at a risk.”
Speaking against the backdrop of a spate of adverse weather conditions felt throughout Fiji and Papua New Guinea, Saumatua said the MSG countries must be united in the common goal to tackle climate change issues and the meeting provided the platform to tie in these aspirations.
“We are countries with a shared interest in leveraging our environment and climate change issues at regional and international meetings,” Saumatua said.
Over the two days, the delegates are going to look at a series of issues affecting the MSG countries and the main objectives are to identify and discuss key environment and climate change issues, develop a strong understanding and
network between MSG environment and climate change ministers and provide recommendations on MSG leaders role on these salient issues into other Pacific islands.
Though MSG members possess most of the Pacific region’s natural resources both marine and terrestrial as well as population, it is of concern that the environmental and climate change interests of MSG members have not been accorded the priority it deserves at the regional and international level.
At the end of the meeting, the group is expected to come up with a communiqu that will set the wheels in motion on how these countries will handle climate change in the coming meetings.
